| So after a long time of being a smoker, I've decided to quit. I've been a smoker for at least 10 years and I think it's time to stop now, but I think I'll need the support of my family to help me. I figured keeping an online diary will keep me focused too. So, without further ado, let us begin.
Day 1 (part 1)
I had an appointment with my doctor yesterday and we decided that Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) would be the best option for me. My doctor asked when I wanted to quit and I gave my quit day as today (Tuesday).
I woke up this morning and I was mostly nervous. After being a smoker for almost half my life, the idea of giving up something that has served as a safety net and a comfort blanket for so long was kind of scary. As I'm using patches and an inhaler (One patch and up to three inhaler cartridges per day) I stuck the patch on first thing and sat down with my ritual cup of coffee. This is the point where I usually have my first cigarette of the day and I have a feeling this is going to be the hardest cigarette to give up. I had one of my inhaler cartridges but it's a "smokeless" inhaler rather than an e-cig which seems to be helpful to more people I know. The lack of smoke from the inhaling seems to throw me. I can taste the nicotine but there's no smoke, that's confusing. By the time I got on to my second cup of coffee I was in desperate need of the feeling of smoke in my lungs (Yeah that sounds bad, doesn't it.) So I had half a cigarette. On top of the patch and the inhaler I'd had a little while ago, half a cigarette was more than adequate, in fact it kinda made me feel ill.
Last night I was babysitting my godson and his brother so luckily this morning I had something to keep me occupied. Playing with the kids really helped me realise what I stood to gain from quitting smoking. I realised that I could play with my godchildren and not worry about having to go for a cigarette and it made me realise that I would be setting a better example for them.
By the time I got home I was convince I could do this and I figured out that to be able to do this I need to keep myself distracted (Any tips on what I could do to to keep myself busy would be much appreciated.)
I think that's all I have to say about day one so far. I'll probably be here a lot today (As part of the keeping myself distracted).

| Hm, maybe you could take up a hobby that requires your focus. Something like writing poetry, solving riddles, sudoku, things like that.
Good on you for taking the initiative, and I wish you the best of luck!

| I've been told having the feel of holding a cigarette is a big help try taking up a hobby that involves holding something slender in your fingers, you already know how to knit so that's a good start. When you can't knit hold on to a pencil or something. Don't be around your friends who smoke for a while because watching them smoke will pull you back in to smoking. Driving and coffee are the cigarettes my quitting friends complain about missing the most so if you can get those two out of the way you're gonna be okay. Taking that half a cigarette with your coffee is fine, going cold turkey hardly ever works. Stick with it girl, I'm proud of you. | |

| Day 1 (Part 2)
Luckily J, the car is not one of the places I smoke (I often have my Godchildren in the car with me so I don't allow people to smoke in there) But those coffee cigarettes are hard. It's about 2/3 hours before I and so far today I've had 6 cigarettes, that's down from the 20-30 I usually smoke a day. Hopefully tomorrow I can get that down to just one cigarette and from there it should be easier.
I'm not gonna lie to you all, quitting smoking is the hardest thing I've ever done (or attempted to do). It's like rock climbing with both hands tied behind your back.
To distract myself today I have: -Spent almost an hour on the phone with my mother -Played a few games of LoL with Sevy and Robby -Clicked about a million cookies -Reorganised my kitchen -Moved my living room around -Gone grocery shopping. Twice.
I've officially exhausted my list of things to do so my mum gave me a knitting project to do. I'm gonna start that tomorrow and hopefully that will keep me occupied for a while. (and maybe have the effect J mentioned of keeping my hands occupied with a slender object.)

| You're doing it, you're doing it! I found a website with tips from a guy who already succeeded at quitting but it seemed like a method that wouldn't work for everybody, however he did have a tip that really stood out to me:
"Take whatever you would have spent on smoking each day, and put it in a jar. This is your Rewards Jar. Go crazy! Celebrate your every success! You deserve it."
So if you can spend that money on not cigarettes think of all the things you could do with it! (my tip would be take your godkids out for ice cream because...who doesn't love ice cream plus the motivation of being able to treat them too :D, but it's yours so do what you want with it.) As long as it's not cigarettes you're spending it on, cuz if you don't have 'em, you can't smoke 'em.
Gonna finish out again by saying how proud I am of you, keep going, you can do this and other motivational phrases that'll make you smile!

| Day 2
Just one cigarette today, that's because I had a stressful day. I had a phone call at 11am today asking me to go for a job interview... The stressful part? They wanted me to be there at 1:15pm today. Luckily I took a notebook and pen with me and fiddled a lot with my pen, less urges to smoke. And the notepad came in handy too.
Everywhere I look though people seem to be smoking, Now I'm trying to give it up it seems to be everywhere. I can only hope that it gets easier to ignore in the future.
Not much else has happened today though so I'll update you again tomorrow.

| You're doing fantastic so far! I'm impressed how fast you went from 20-30 a day to 6 yesterday to 1 today. If you're having trouble dealing with stress try taking up yoga in the mornings or something just to get you relaxed early on in your day. | |

| Day 3
So today has been the worst day ever. Unfortunately my dog got hit by a car earlier, we had to have him put down. So that sort of kicked me off today. I had an entire packet of cigarettes and today is still not over.
Don't really feel like saying much more. Gonna try sleeping more.

| The third day is usually the hardest to begin with. I can't even begin to describe how much that must suck. I'm really sorry to hear about your dog too. | |

| Day 4
Thanks guys. I haven't really done much more than sleep today but I still managed to smoke like five cigarettes. Hoping tomorrow (technically today) will go better.
